The Benefits of Touch Screen Technology

A touch screen or a capacitive touch screen is simply the combination of an input and output interface. The touch screen is generally placed on top of a normal computer visual display of a simple data processing system. While the screen may be an LCD, LED, resistive, or an LED touch screen, the system is most often a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Touch screen technology has come a long way in recent years. This is not surprising when you think about the advances that have been made in computer technology over the last few decades. For example, the humble computer mouse had all of 10 basic buttons and was extremely awkward to use. However, with the development of the touch screen or capacitive touch screen, this became just another device that people could use. Today, you can easily use your laptop, smartphone, or tablet computer to browse the internet, watch videos, or play games.

In order for the touch screen to work, it uses two things – one is a pressure sensor, which senses physical touch and then responds by sending out an electric charge. This electric charge is not enough to provide a very accurate response, however, so the device has a second element, called a capacitive sensor, that reads this electrical charge and then determines whether or not to give off an electric charge. The result is that these devices can detect physical touch, but not only that but also several different kinds of pressure. Thus, for example, a user might touch a button on a keyboard and the device will react to that touch, or if you place a finger on the screen then the machine will know that you are pressing a particular area, and will therefore give off an electrical charge.

There are three layers to the touch screen technology, and they are referred to as a thin film, an amorphous silicon wafer, and a solid amorphous layer. The thin film was the first layer that was used on the electronic devices, such as calculators, and cell phones. These devices were riddled with small cracks that were caused by constant pressure from the screen. However, as time progressed, more companies developed thicker layers. Today, it is considered to be the best way to go.

On a typical touch screen, there is a thin, flat display that is stuck to the top and bottom of the unit. When you press a finger on top of this display, the finger is actually “placing” a virtual signal on the screen – the image that is displayed is entirely based on the power of your finger. As you can imagine, this is pretty impressive technology, and it has revolutionized the way that many people interact with their electronic devices. The pressure sensitive circuitry lets you not only recognize the different finger positions, but also lets you actually change the content on your screen, for instance, if you are writing and need to type into a text box, you can simply change the input device.

Another advantage of these types of touch screens is the ease in which you can navigate through menus and select options on your device. If you are using a touch screen calculator, for example, you can drag the stylus along the screen to browse through the calculator. This is the same as navigating a mouse or trackball on a computer, and you don’t even need your fingers to do this! Also, you don’t have to worry about your fingers getting “burned” when you use a stylus. In fact, if you want to use a touch screen and don’t want to carry around a mouse, there are several stylus alternatives that allow you to use the screen with only a finger, which is much easier and more comfortable than trying to lug around a cumbersome mouse.
